Teaching Time, Verbs, and Daily Routines in the ESL Classroom:

I go..., play..., and...

Here we are for Book 2 Lesson 7 and the first lesson of the chapter.

Wow! 28 lessons done so far and only 12 more to go.

So, the target expressions for this chapter include time, numbers, and daily routines. It seems an easy enough combination but when you really look at it more closely, it can be quite tough from a young English Learner's point of view.

We've already done a few of the time lessons at our schools and have even done the numbers already in tens in the first part of the textbook but why not go ahead and give the kids a review just in case. Well, what do you know? The kids have already forgotten 11, 12, and are mixing up 12 and 20 altogether. Some even forgot how to ask for the time.

Should we play "What time is it, Mr. Wolf?" Well, not really. They are Grade 6ers after all and I don't think they would have gotten too excited about it. So, we just went through the numbers as quick as we could and even got into the numbers rap song back in Lesson 2-3:

And since we have a pretty complicated quiz on page 44 and 45, why not go ahead and do a repeating session on those 8 verbs just to keep the kids on par with the notebook. Remember, I'm trying to think on a young learner of English mind set here, and my point is to keep this lesson as easy and as nurturing as possible; not just to get the keywords for "Young Learners of English."

Who wants a whole class of complaining Grade 6ers anyway's? Not me.

So, after that session we told the kids we would go through the quiz and let them figure out where those famous cities are on the pages and write in the katakana characters in those boxes on the world map.

I was wondering too why didn't the publisher just have the kids write in some alphabet characters.

(For those of you outside Japan looking in, this quiz is about matching certain answers to questions of time mixed with daily routines and also having too label the city which is connected to the question in particular to a little box from a world map in the textbook, and also having to write the hands on a small clock just beside the quiz question in particular. There are only 8 questions, but all in all it seems there are 32 variables altogether. So, how would you feel if you were a young learner of English doing this quiz. Nuff said.)

Well, we still asked the kids to hold off on the quiz for a brief speaking and listening exercise. Now, that's the one in the teacher's guide. The ALT and HRT can go into a little "drama mode" and do a little skit for the kids. And the theme for today is Star Trek, and I'm playing Captain Kirk...
"Sensei, ...what ... time ... do you... ...get up?" Sometimes you might actually get a "Spock" type for an HRT so the answer might be... well just having fun... But I feel so embarrassed when it's my turn to be asked, and my answer turns out to be the latest time in the morning compared to the kids in the end and the Home Room Teacher. But remember it's "Drama Time" and "if you don't really have an exciting lesson to play with why not just play with it." So, I answered, "I get up at 7:50 am." The class roars, and I usually get asked how do I do it? You know, how do I get to school on time. (Hmm... I can really exploit this with a few gestures, and some time expressions...)

So, I answer: "I get up at 7:50, and I walk to the kitchen, at 7:51 I put toast in the toaster and I start the coffee maker, at 7:52 I wash my face, brush my teeth, put on my clothes, and comb my hair. At 7:55, I walk back to the kitchen and put jam on the toast and drink my coffee..., you know, I eat my breakfast. At 8:00 I go to school by car."

And in Japanese I add, "Watashi wa gakko madde no chika-michi wa yoku shittemasu." Translated as "I know all the shortcuts to school."

Then I ask the kids, "How about you? What time do you get up?" Well, you'll get a few kids to volunteer and if you don't just call the day's student number and go from there. Soon you'll get a few kids to start using the time expressions and using them in tens not just with the o' clocks.

As they get warmed-up, we soon start the quiz. And the lesson goes on from there...
