Presentation Day!...

Teaching Time, Some Verbs of Routine, and a little memo writing in the textbook:

Well, we're finally here for the last lesson of Unit/Lesson 7.

Still starting off the lesson with the chant and a quick review we got down to the nitty gritty of the lesson.

I did mention I had something in store for the kids for their Showing and Telling activity on page 49.

Well, it goes like this:

The main goals of the lesson were to get the kids to speak as individuals in front of their peers in English. Moreover, the kids would have to try and use as little Japanese as they could. There would also have to be some kind of interaction between the members of each group just like an "interview game" but to stay within the confines of a "show and tell" theme and mix in a little "conversation" type qualities. Also, listening to others earnestly was a main theme I wanted to point out so we had to format the activity in a certain way to satisfy all these qualities.

First, we had the kids review their "initial notes" with me, then with their friends, just to see how well they remembered the items on page 48. Once they were ready, we moved on to the next point.

Second, since they were in groups of about five students, they were told to write down the four other students' names (in English of course!) on page 49. Then, they had to write down two "initialed" verb expressions for each speech bubble (the HRT's flip out in delight when you teach them "speech bubble" by the way) followed by a blank time note like this for example:

G.U. __ : __ __

G.T.B. __ : __ __

So, as the show and tell session would begin in groups, the speaker would have to stand up and the listeners would have to pay attention so as their 2 items would come up for that person's speech bubble they would have to fill in the time for that particular item. The pictures below will show you in more detail.

Now, for the "conversational" tidbit. If the listeners had not caught that certain time expression because the speaker was not clear enough the first time around, the listeners had had to wait until the speaker was finished and only
then could they ask questions like "Sorry, what time do you go to bed?" and so on.

The time left over in the class was spent on students giving presentations in front of the class or having students tell the class any "surprising items" they had heard from their group members like "Kenji watches TV at 12:00 and goes to bed at 2:00," and the like.

Hope you had a great lesson and chapter. There are many pics and a few videos below.
